Episode two in "The NationalparkexperienceTM"
was a suggestion of a return journey.
The earth from the original installation was bagged up into 113 portions and
labelled with the grid reference of the site of origin. SK28848357 became a
brand name indicative of a merchandisable comodity.
The bags became limited edition items from a landscape ready to be taken away
by the veiwer, and possibly returned to their site of origin after a pilgrimage of sorts.
The accompanying photograph showed the hole which remains as a semi-permanent
monument to past efforts. A tourist map packaged in the same modular plastic
bag linked the physicality of the ground to the abstract language of maps. It
indicated there was, and still is a path to be followed. |

I am drawn to the idea of free merchandise; By giving it away, I hoped to invite the viewer not only to participate in the creative process, and also perhaps to rediscover and reclaim nature for themselves. Although most of the bags were taken, I can't be sure whether anyone has ever retraced my steps or has even been back to the original site, but I checked a few years later and the hole was still there. |
